When a business owner installs an alarm system and connects it to a monitoring service, they’re making an act of trust. They’re trusting that if something happens at 2 am on a Tuesday — when they’re at home, asleep — someone is watching, and someone will respond.
At Zagame Security Group, that trust is taken seriously. But we’ve found that many clients, even long-term ones, have never been walked through exactly what happens when their alarm triggers. So here it is — a clear, plain-English explanation of what ZSG’s alarm monitoring and response process looks like from the moment a signal is received.
Step 1: The Signal Is Received
Your alarm system — whether it’s a motion sensor, a door or window contact, a duress button, or a smoke detector — sends a signal to ZSG’s monitoring centre the instant it is triggered. This happens automatically, over your alarm system’s communication pathway (broadband, 4G, or landline depending on your setup).
ZSG’s monitoring centre is staffed by live operators 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is no automated system handling your alert and deciding whether to escalate. A real person sees your signal in real time.
Step 2: The Operator Assesses the Signal
Not every alarm trigger is a break-in. False alarms are a reality — a staff member who forgot the code, a door left ajar in the wind, an animal triggering an outdoor motion sensor. ZSG’s operators are trained to assess the nature of the signal before escalating.
They’ll check: Is this a single zone trigger or multiple zones activating in sequence (which suggests movement through a building)? Has this site had recent false alarms? Is there a time-of-day context that affects the risk level? Is this a duress signal — indicating a person in the building may be in danger?
That assessment takes seconds, not minutes, and it’s what separates a professional monitoring service from a basic automated dial-out system.
Step 3: Contact Is Made
The operator attempts to contact the nominated keyholders for your property — the people you’ve designated to receive calls in the event of an alarm activation. This contact list is set up during your onboarding with ZSG and should be reviewed regularly to ensure numbers are current.
If a keyholder confirms the activation is a false alarm and provides the correct verification code, the operator logs the event and no further action is taken. If contact cannot be made, or if the activation appears genuine, the operator moves to the next step.
Step 4: Response Is Dispatched
Depending on the nature of the alarm and the response plan in place for your site, ZSG’s operator will dispatch one or more of the following:
- A ZSG security guard or patrol vehicle to attend the premises and conduct a physical check.
- Victoria Police, if the situation warrants immediate law enforcement attendance.
- Fire and Rescue Victoria, in the case of smoke or fire signals.
- An ambulance, if a duress signal indicates a medical emergency.
For clients with a ZSG patrol vehicle operating in their area — which covers most of Gippsland and Latrobe Valley throughout the night — response times are fast. The patrol vehicle conducts a perimeter and entry-point check, assesses whether a breach has occurred, and secures the site as required.
Step 5: The Outcome Is Logged and You Are Informed
Every activation, operator decision, keyholder contact attempt, and response action is logged in ZSG’s system with a timestamp. That record is available to you.
After the event, you’ll receive a report of what happened, what was found, and what actions were taken. If there was a genuine breach, ZSG’s team can advise on next steps — from liaising with police to recommending additional security measures to prevent recurrence.
Why This Process Matters
The difference between alarm monitoring done well and alarm monitoring done poorly is the human layer. Automated systems can dial a number — but they can’t assess context, make judgement calls, or dispatch the right response for the right situation. ZSG’s operators are trained security professionals, not call centre workers reading from a script.
That’s why businesses across Gippsland, Latrobe Valley, Sale, and Melbourne have trusted ZSG with their alarm monitoring for years — and why many of those relationships span more than a decade.
