Most business owners hiring a security company for the first time focus on price and availability. Fair enough — those matter. But there’s a quieter question that matters just as much, and it rarely comes up until something goes wrong: is this provider actually held to an industry standard, or just a licence number?
This is where ASIAL accreditation comes in.
What Is ASIAL?
The Australian Security Industry Association Limited (ASIAL) is the peak national body for the security industry. It sets standards around training, conduct, insurance, and operational practice that go beyond the baseline requirements of a state security licence.
Holding a Victorian security licence means a company meets the legal minimum to operate. ASIAL membership — and particularly Platinum-level accreditation — signals a provider has voluntarily committed to a higher, independently assessed standard of professionalism.
Why the Distinction Matters
Victoria requires every security business to hold a licence, so on paper, every provider you call looks similar: licensed, insured, able to supply guards. But licensing is a floor, not a ceiling. It tells you a company is legally allowed to operate — it doesn’t tell you much about:
- How rigorously staff are trained beyond the mandatory minimum
- How the business handles incident reporting and escalation
- Whether industry best practice is actually built into day-to-day operations
- How the company is regarded by its peers and by law enforcement partners
ASIAL accreditation exists to fill that gap. It’s an extra layer of scrutiny that a business doesn’t need to sign up for — which is exactly why it’s a useful signal when you’re comparing providers.
What This Looks Like in Practice
For a business owner, the practical difference between a licensed-only provider and an ASIAL-accredited one often shows up in the details:
- Consistency — guards and controllers operating to the same standard across every site and shift
- Accountability — clear incident reporting processes that hold up if something needs to be escalated to police or insurers
- Ongoing training, not just onboarding
- Industry relationships that can matter in a genuine emergency — familiarity with local police, event authorities, and licensing bodies
None of this shows up on a standard quote. It shows up when something actually happens and you find out whether your provider’s processes hold up under pressure.
What to Ask Before You Hire
If you’re comparing security providers in Gippsland or anywhere in Victoria, it’s worth asking directly:
- Are you ASIAL accredited, and at what level?
- What licences do you hold beyond the base security business licence (firearms, labour hire, etc.)?
- Can you provide references from businesses similar to mine?
ZSG holds ASIAL Platinum Partner status, alongside our Victorian Firearms Licence (571-756-60H), Private Security Business Licence (571-756-70S), and Labour Hire Licence (VICLHL01480). If you’d like to understand what that means for your specific site or event, our team is happy to walk you through it.
